Volleyball Guidelines
Each school is allowed to enter 2 mixed teams per Division. Each team must have at least 50% girls. More girls will be allowed, but not more boys than girls.
- If you are not able to have 3 girls play on the floor, you must play 1 male player down – for example, only 5 players on the floor rather than 6 (2 girls, 3 boys)
For those schools with fewer than 25 participants, combining students will be allowed between “A” and “B” division but each student can only play on 1 team. If you bump up a student to play on the “B” division team, they may not play on your “A” division team.
There will be 2 time-outs allowed for each team per game.
PLAYERS
There will be a maximum of 10 players allowed on the team.
Each player on the team must be on the floor at least once during the game, but following rotations are up to each coach.
If the player serves prior to the referee whistle, a point and the ball will go to the receiving team.
UNIFORMS
Each team member must wear a numbered jersey. Please follow the Dress Guidelines for Convention.
RULES WHILE SERVING:
- The player may serve anywhere along the back line, but only one foot may cross the back line during service.
- A loss of serve will occur if the ball hits the roof on the serve.
- A loss of serve will not occur if the ball hits the net on the serve provided it lands inbounds.
RULES WHILE IN PLAY:
- The ball may be served underhand or overhand.
- The ball must be clearly visible to opponents before the serve.
- First game serve will be determined by flipping a coin.
- If the ball hits the roof on your side during the volley, you may play it.
- If the ball hits the net during the volley, you may play it.
PLAYING THE GAME (VOLLEY):
- There will be a maximum of 3 hits per side.
- The same player may not hit the ball twice in succession.
- The ball may be played off the net during a volley and on a serve.
- A ball landing on a boundary line is good.
- When the ball cleanly hits the shoulder or head, it constitutes a legal hit. A double hit will not be allowed.
- If 2 or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered 1 play and the players involved may not participate in the next play.
- A player may not block or attack a serve.
RALLY SCORING:
- There will be a point scored on every serve of the ball.
- Offence will score on a defensive miss or out-of-bounds hit.
- Defence will score on an offensive miss, out-of-bounds hit, or serve into the net.
- Games will be played to 15 points for the 1st and 2nd sets; if a 3rd set is required as tie-breaker, it will also go to 15 points.
- Teams must win by 2 points.
ROTATION:
- Teams will rotate each time they win the serve – this is known as “side-out.”
- Players will rotate in a clockwise manner.
BASIC VIOLATIONS:
- Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully is a violation.
- Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing, etc) is a violation.
- Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play is not allowed. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called and the ball will continue to be in play.
- Reaching over the net is a violation except for the following:
- When executing a follow-through
- When blocking a ball which is in the opponent’s court but is being returned (the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact).
- Reaching under the net is a violation (if it interferes with the ball or an opposing player)
- Failure to serve in the correct order is a violation.
- If a back row player spikes the ball in front of the blue 10 foot line, the penalty will result in a point for the other team and possession of the ball.
